Dutch and Hungarian

Dutch and Hungarian are two of Europe's less commonly studied languages, and that very rarity is part of what makes this combination distinctive and valuable. Dutch is spoken by around 24 million people in the Netherlands and Belgium and has a literary and commercial tradition of considerable importance. The Netherlands is one of the UK's closest trading partners and one of the most significant economies in Europe.

Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language, entirely unrelated to the Indo-European languages that surround it, spoken by around 13 million people and the official language of Hungary, a member state of the European Union with growing economic significance in Central Europe.

At University College London this four-year programme takes you to an advanced level in both languages, developing your proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening alongside engagement with the literary, cultural and historical traditions of the Netherlands and Hungary. UCL's Department of Dutch and the European Languages section provide scholarly expertise in both traditions, and London's position as a major European cultural and commercial hub offers additional resources for engaging with both language communities. You will study literature, history, culture and contemporary society in both the Dutch-speaking and Hungarian-speaking worlds, developing the kind of nuanced understanding that only sustained linguistic engagement can provide.

Graduates with proficiency in Dutch and Hungarian are genuinely rare, and that scarcity has real market value. Careers in international business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, journalism, cultural organisations, European institutions, legal practice and academic research are all accessible. The European Union and international organisations that require competence in less commonly taught EU languages are particularly significant employers.
