Drama and Film

Drama and film together examine storytelling and performance across two of its most significant twentieth-century forms, exploring the art of theatre alongside the language and practice of cinema. Drama asks how live performance creates meaning, how texts are transformed in production, how acting, direction, and design collaborate to shape what an audience experiences. Film studies examines cinema as both art and industry, developing critical tools for analysing visual storytelling, the grammar of editing and cinematography, and the cultural and social contexts in which films are made and seen.

The two disciplines share fundamental interests in narrative, character, and the power of performed or represented experience.

At Anglia Ruskin University this three-year full-time programme develops your theoretical and practical engagement with both forms, helping you grow as a confident and versatile practitioner with the transferable skills to work across whichever area you choose to pursue. You will engage with drama theory and practice alongside film history, genre, and critical analysis, and you will develop your own creative and analytical capabilities across both. The programme prepares you for work in the creative industries as well as for roles in education, arts management, and the broader cultural sector.

Graduates from drama and film programmes work in theatre, film, and television production, arts administration, script development, education, community arts, and the cultural sector more broadly. Some move into directing, acting, or writing careers, while others find roles in casting, production management, arts journalism, or screen education. The skills developed through the combination, including creative analysis, project management, communication, and cultural sensitivity, transfer into a wide range of professional contexts.

Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in theatre, film, or media studies.
