Digital Media & Information Studies/Philosophy
Digital media and information studies and philosophy is a combination that addresses the human dimensions of the digital age with both empirical and philosophical rigour. Digital media and information studies explores how digital content is created, distributed and consumed, how information flows through networked societies, and what social, cultural and economic effects these processes produce. Philosophy provides the conceptual and analytical tools to interrogate the deeper questions raised by digital life: what is knowledge in a networked age, what are the ethics of data, algorithmic decision-making and digital surveillance, and what notions of identity, community and public life do digital technologies presuppose or undermine?
At the University of Glasgow you will pursue both disciplines with a commitment to the human perspectives and value questions that arise at the intersection of technology, information and society. The programme runs over four years full time, reflecting the Scottish honours degree structure, and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study these questions in a different national and institutional context. Glasgow's research environment supports engagement with current debates in digital culture, information ethics and philosophy of technology.
You will develop skills in critical analysis, theoretical argument, digital research methods, information evaluation and extended academic writing. The capacity to think carefully and rigorously about technology, information and their social consequences is a genuinely valuable competence in a world where these issues affect every sector of professional and public life.
Graduates from this combination pursue careers in research, policy, journalism, digital ethics, communications, information management, the public sector and technology organisations. Postgraduate study in digital humanities, philosophy, information studies, media studies or ethics of technology is also a natural progression for those wanting to develop specialist expertise.
