About this course

Diagnostic radiography is the clinical profession responsible for producing the medical images, from X-rays and fluoroscopy to CT, that allow clinicians to diagnose injury and disease with precision. Radiographers operate complex imaging equipment, position patients safely, optimise image quality, and work as part of multidisciplinary clinical teams to ensure that the right information is available to support clinical decisions. The role requires both technical expertise and genuine patient-centred care, since imaging procedures often occur at anxious or difficult moments in a patient's healthcare journey.

At the University of Plymouth, this four-year full-time programme, which includes an integrated foundation year, prepares you for professional practice across the full range of diagnostic imaging modalities. The foundation year develops the biomedical science foundations needed for the main degree, including an introduction to microbiology and the immune system, preparing you to understand infection control and patient safety principles that are essential in a clinical environment. As the degree progresses, you will develop clinical skills in patient assessment, image acquisition, radiation protection, and the interpretation of imaging findings, supported by well-supervised clinical placements.
