About this course

Diagnostic radiography is the healthcare science profession responsible for producing high-quality medical images that are used to diagnose and monitor disease and injury. Radiographers use X-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy to create images that clinicians depend on to make accurate diagnoses and plan treatment. The profession combines technical competence in imaging equipment and safety with patient-centred care, requiring practitioners who can work with patients at difficult moments in their lives while also maintaining the rigorous standards of image quality and radiation protection that clinical safety demands.

At the University of Plymouth, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year that provides an introductory framework for healthcare science practice, using an enquiry-based learning approach in small group facilitated settings to help students apply their learning to clinically relevant scenarios. The foundation year develops the theoretical, practical, and personal attributes necessary for a healthcare science practitioner, preparing you to engage fully with the clinical and scientific content of the main degree. Throughout the programme, you will combine academic study with substantial supervised clinical placement experience, gaining competence across the full range of imaging modalities and patient groups.

With a typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points, this programme leads to registration as a diagnostic radiographer with the Health and Care Professions Council, the professional qualification required to practise in the UK.
