About this course

Diagnostic radiography is a clinical healthcare profession concerned with producing high-quality medical images that enable doctors to diagnose and treat disease and injury. Diagnostic radiographers work with X-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and fluoroscopy equipment, applying detailed knowledge of anatomy, physics and patient care to obtain images that are accurate, safe and of sufficient quality to support clinical decision-making. The profession plays a central role in modern healthcare, with diagnostic imaging involved in a substantial proportion of all patient pathways in the NHS.

At Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme leads to eligibility to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as a diagnostic radiographer. You will study human anatomy and physiology, radiation physics and imaging science, radiographic technique, pathology, image interpretation, patient care and the professional and ethical framework of radiographic practice. Clinical placements are fundamental to the programme, and you will spend significant time in NHS hospitals and imaging departments, developing your clinical skills under the supervision of experienced practitioners.

The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points.

Registered diagnostic radiographers work in NHS hospitals, private hospitals, imaging centres and increasingly in community diagnostic hubs being established across England. Specialisation is possible in areas such as computed tomography, MRI, vascular imaging, nuclear medicine and mammography. There are also progression pathways into advanced and consultant radiographer practice, where radiographers take on extended clinical roles including image reporting and clinical decision-making.

Many radiographers also move into education, research or management as their careers develop. The profession offers strong job security, clear progression structures and the satisfaction of direct contribution to patient care.
