About this course

Design engineering occupies the fertile ground between engineering and design, seeking to create products, processes, and systems that are not only technically sound but also genuinely useful, appropriate to human need, and as elegant as they can be. Where traditional engineering has often separated analytical problem-solving from creative conception, design engineering holds them together, training practitioners who can move from insight about a human need to a physical realisation through a process that is rigorous, creative, and human-centred. The discipline is increasingly important as society faces complex challenges that require technically sophisticated but also deeply considered solutions.

At the University of Bristol, this programme includes a foundation year, providing an accessible route into engineering-level study for students whose prior qualifications require additional mathematical or scientific preparation. The full programme develops your capabilities across the full design engineering cycle, from understanding user needs and contextual requirements through concept generation, prototyping, analysis, and refinement to the production of solutions that work in the real world. You will engage with structural analysis, materials science, manufacturing processes, electronics, and computer-aided design, alongside the design thinking and project management skills that bring these technical capabilities together.

Bristol is one of the UK's leading universities for engineering, and the programme reflects that standing.

Graduates work in product design and development, engineering consultancy, manufacturing, consumer electronics, medical devices, transport, and a wide range of sectors where sophisticated engineered products are created. The combination of technical depth and design sensibility is valued wherever the challenge is not simply to build something that functions but to build something that functions well for people. Postgraduate study in design engineering, product design, or engineering disciplines is an option, as is professional engineering registration through a route of further professional development.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” the …
