Design Engineering

Design engineering occupies the space where creative problem-solving meets technical rigour, asking not just how things should look but how they can be designed, engineered, and manufactured to work effectively in the real world. It draws on both the imaginative thinking of design and the analytical methods of engineering, developing practitioners who can take an idea from initial concept through detailed design and prototyping to manufacture. The field encompasses consumer products, medical devices, transport systems, infrastructure components, and virtually anything that is designed to be built and used.

At Middlesex University this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides a structured introduction to design and engineering fundamentals before the main degree begins. You will work on hands-on, project-based learning throughout, developing skills in computer-aided design, materials selection, prototyping, and the manufacturing processes that turn designs into objects. You will also engage with the human and sustainability dimensions of design, understanding how the things engineers design interact with people and the environment.

The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities, ensuring your technical and creative development is grounded in real professional experience.

Design engineering graduates work across a wide range of manufacturing and product development industries, in roles spanning concept design, detailed engineering, prototype development, test and evaluation, and product management. Medical devices, consumer electronics, automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods are all sectors that recruit design engineers. Some graduates move into entrepreneurship, using the broad skills developed in the degree to develop their own products or start design studios.

Others pursue postgraduate study in product design, engineering, or innovation management to develop specialist expertise for senior technical or commercial roles.
