Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy
Dental hygiene and dental therapy is a combined oral health profession that trains you to deliver two distinct but complementary sets of clinical skills. Dental hygienists are specialists in the prevention and treatment of gum disease, providing clinical care including scaling, polishing, and preventive advice to patients under the prescription of a dentist. Dental therapists have a broader clinical scope, also treating dental decay and placing restorations in children and adults.
Qualifying in both gives you a range of skills and a level of clinical versatility that is increasingly valued in modern dental practices looking to deliver more care through their extended teams.
At the University of Huddersfield this three-year full-time programme prepares compassionate, detail-oriented graduates for a career in which hands-on patient care is central. You will develop the clinical skills of both dental hygiene and dental therapy through supervised patient contact in dental clinics alongside the scientific knowledge of oral biology, microbiology, pharmacology, and radiography that underpins safe and effective practice. The programme places patient care at the heart of what you learn, developing the communication and professional skills needed to build positive relationships with patients across all age groups and backgrounds.
Graduates register with the General Dental Council and work as qualified dental hygienists and therapists in NHS and private dental practices, community dental services, and specialist clinics. The combined qualification gives you greater clinical scope and employment flexibility than a single-qualification route. As the NHS continues to explore extended team models to improve access to dental care, hygienist-therapists are increasingly well placed to take on broader clinical responsibilities.
Some graduates continue to further qualifications in oral health or pursue roles in education, practice management, or clinical research within dentistry.
