Czech and Dutch

Czech and Dutch is an unusual and genuinely distinctive language combination, connecting two European traditions that are rarely studied together. Czech is the official language of the Czech Republic, spoken by around 10 million people, and it gives access to a rich literary and philosophical tradition as well as to one of central Europe's most significant economies. Dutch, spoken by approximately 24 million people in the Netherlands and Belgium, opens a cultural world spanning a golden age of painting, liberal political tradition and a modern economy closely integrated with the rest of Europe.

At University College London, this four-year full-time programme develops your proficiency in both languages to an advanced level, working on grammar, spoken and written expression, translation and textual analysis in Czech and Dutch simultaneously. You will engage with the literatures, histories and cultures of the countries where each language is used, building the contextual knowledge that makes genuine linguistic competence meaningful. UCL's strong tradition in Slavonic and East European studies provides particular depth for the Czech element of the programme, while its position in London gives access to professional networks and cultural resources across both language communities.

Graduates with fluency in two such distinctive European languages are well placed in careers in translation and interpreting, international business, diplomacy, journalism, cultural organisations, European institutions and education.
