Welsh, media and public relations is a programme that brings together the study of the Welsh language and its cultural traditions with the contemporary disciplines of media and public relations, addressing the realities of a bilingual country in which Welsh-language media, government communications and commercial PR all operate alongside English-language counterparts. Welsh is a living language with around 900,000 speakers, a rich literary and oral tradition, and a growing presence in broadcasting, digital media and public life. Media and public relations bring the skills to shape communications, build relationships with audiences and manage reputation across multiple platforms and contexts.
At Swansea University this three-year, full-time programme offers a genuinely unique combination, equipping you to work confidently in Welsh and English while also mastering the strategic and practical elements of media work and public relations. You will develop your Welsh language skills and engage with Welsh literature, culture, history and contemporary affairs, alongside the theory and practice of media production, journalism, digital communications, PR strategy, campaign management and stakeholder engagement. The programme meets the demands of a rapidly evolving bilingual communications landscape, preparing graduates for roles that require fluency in both languages and the ability to operate across Welsh and English-medium environments.
Graduates pursue careers in Welsh-language broadcasting, journalism and media production, public relations and communications agencies, government and public sector communications, cultural organisations, the third sector and digital content creation. The combination of Welsh-language competence and media and PR skills is a genuine differentiator in the Welsh job market and in organisations with Welsh-medium responsibilities. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in Welsh studies, journalism, media or communications.
