About this course

Cyber security is one of the most pressing and fast-moving challenges in the technology landscape, as the systems and data that governments, businesses and individuals depend on face constant and increasingly sophisticated threats. The discipline encompasses the technical, organisational and human dimensions of protecting information systems, networks and data from unauthorised access, disruption and damage. It draws on computer science, mathematics, cryptography and network engineering alongside an understanding of attacker behaviour and the policies and procedures that govern secure practice.

At Teesside University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route for students who want to build their computational and mathematical foundations before progressing into the main degree. It also includes a sandwich year in professional placement and a work placement, giving you direct industry experience in a cyber security or related technology role. You will develop your understanding of algorithms, data structures and computational problem-solving alongside specialist cyber security knowledge in areas including cryptography, network security, vulnerability analysis, penetration testing and security operations.

Graduates from cyber security programmes are in exceptionally high demand across every sector that uses information technology, which is now essentially all of them. Roles include cyber security analyst, penetration tester, security operations centre analyst, incident response specialist, information security manager and security architect. Many graduates work in financial services, government, defence, healthcare, technology firms and professional services consultancies.

Professional certifications and postgraduate study in cyber security, information security or digital forensics are common next steps for those who want to develop specialist expertise or move into more senior roles.
