About this course

Cyber security is the discipline dedicated to protecting digital systems, networks and data from unauthorised access, damage and disruption. As the world's dependence on digital infrastructure has grown, so has the sophistication and frequency of attacks against it, making cyber security one of the most critically important fields in technology today. The discipline encompasses technical skills such as network defence, penetration testing and cryptography alongside broader competencies in risk management, policy and governance, reflecting the reality that security is both a technical and an organisational challenge.

At Roehampton University, this three-year programme includes a foundation year for students who need to build their technical and academic foundations before the main degree, as well as a sandwich placement year that provides sustained industry experience. You will develop hands-on expertise in cybersecurity operations, AI-driven threat detection and security testing through integrated project-based learning, building both technical competence and the professional skills that employers look for. The programme is designed to ensure that you graduate with a comprehensive portfolio that demonstrates your abilities across the range of cybersecurity disciplines, as well as real-world experience through the placement year and work placement opportunities throughout.

Graduates in cyber security are in strong demand across the economy. Common career destinations include security analyst, penetration tester, incident response specialist, security engineer, information security manager and cybersecurity consultant. The field offers roles across financial services, government and defence, technology companies, healthcare and critical national infrastructure.

Many graduates pursue professional certifications alongside or after their degree, and some go on to postgraduate study in cybersecurity, computer science or digital forensics. The combination of technical depth and project experience the programme provides is a strong foundation for a career in one of the fastest-growing areas of technology.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: coursework pushes you to actually build real systems, not just write essays. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you s…
