About this course

Cyber security has become one of the defining challenges of the digital age. As societies depend more deeply on networked systems for everything from banking and healthcare to infrastructure and democratic processes, the ability to protect those systems from attack, compromise, and misuse has become genuinely critical. Cyber security as a discipline draws on computer science, mathematics, human behaviour, law, and ethics, making it a subject that is technically demanding and conceptually rich at the same time.

Studying cyber security at Nottingham Trent University on this three-year full-time programme, you will build a thorough understanding of how digital systems can be attacked and how they can be defended. You will study topics including network security, cryptography, secure software development, penetration testing, digital forensics, and risk management. Alongside the technical content, you will develop an appreciation of the human and organisational dimensions of security, since most breaches involve a combination of technical vulnerability and human error or intent.

You will work in dedicated laboratory environments, applying concepts in realistic scenarios and learning to think like both a defender and an adversary.

The discipline develops a particular kind of analytical mindset. You learn to examine systems for weaknesses before attackers find them, to think systematically about risk and consequence, and to communicate complex technical issues clearly to people who may not share your technical background. Graduates go on to roles including security analyst, penetration tester, incident responder, security architect, digital forensics investigator, and risk consultant. Government agencies, financial services firms, technology companies, critical infrastructure operators, and management consultancies all recruit heavily in this area.

Further study at masters level, or professional certifications pursued alongside or after the degree, can accelerate progression into specialist or leadership roles in the field.
