About this course

Cyber security and digital forensics are two of the most important disciplines in contemporary computing, addressing the challenge of protecting digital systems from attack and the investigation of criminal activity in digital environments. As society has become more dependent on networked systems, from personal devices and financial infrastructure to healthcare systems and national security, the threats posed by malicious actors have grown in scale and sophistication. The professionals who understand how those threats work, how to defend against them and how to gather and analyse evidence from digital crime scenes are in significant demand across public and private sectors.

This four-year programme at the University of Westminster includes a placement year and a year abroad, and is structured to develop both theoretical understanding and practical competence. The programme includes a foundation element, allowing students who need additional preparation to build the scientific and computing foundations before progressing into the full degree. You will study the principles of network security, cryptography, penetration testing, malware analysis and digital forensics, developing the technical skills and analytical judgment that professional roles in these fields require.

Work placement opportunities are integrated throughout, ensuring that your practical development proceeds alongside your academic studies and that you gain direct professional experience before graduating.

Graduates of cyber security and forensics programmes are in high and growing demand. Government agencies, law enforcement, the armed forces, intelligence services, banks, technology companies, healthcare organisations and critical infrastructure operators all employ cyber security professionals. Digital forensics expertise is particularly valued in law enforcement, legal practice and corporate security.

Roles include penetration tester, security analyst, forensic investigator, security architect and incident responder. Postgraduate study in information security, cyber security or digital forensics is a natural next step for those who wish to develop specialist technical expertise or to move into research or senior professional roles.
