Culture, Heritage and Theology

Culture, Heritage and Theology is a rich and interdisciplinary combination that examines the material, spiritual and intellectual traditions through which human communities have made sense of their existence. Culture in this context encompasses the practices, beliefs, arts and social forms through which communities express and transmit their identities. Heritage addresses the way in which the past is preserved, interpreted and contested in the present, raising fundamental questions about what we choose to remember, who gets to define it, and what it means for living communities.

Theology engages with the oldest and most persistent questions about the nature of the divine, the meaning of existence, and the relationship between faith and reason.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this part-time programme is embedded in a region of extraordinary cultural and religious significance. The Highlands and Islands have been shaped by Celtic Christianity, Gaelic culture, Norse influence, Presbyterian traditions, and more recent interfaith encounters in ways that make the region itself a living laboratory for the study of culture, heritage and faith. You will engage with the history, archaeology, oral traditions and material culture of the region alongside the broader theoretical and theological frameworks that allow you to situate these within wider human experience.

The part-time mode allows you to develop this understanding progressively alongside other commitments.

Graduates of Culture, Heritage and Theology programmes work in heritage and museum organisations, cultural institutions, religious communities and chaplaincy, education, community development, tourism, and the voluntary sector. Many pursue postgraduate study in theology, heritage studies, religious studies, or related fields. Some develop research careers or move into roles in faith communities, interfaith dialogue, education and social work where theological understanding and cultural sensitivity are central.
