Culture, Heritage and History

Culture, heritage, and history is a degree that brings together three interconnected ways of engaging with the past and the present. Culture in the academic sense refers to the beliefs, practices, artefacts, and ways of life through which communities create meaning and identity. Heritage is concerned with how societies select, preserve, and interpret elements of the past for present and future generations, and with the political and ethical dimensions of those choices.

History examines the past through evidence, constructing interpretive accounts of how societies have changed and why. Together they give you a rich, multi-perspectival way of understanding the relationship between past and present.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this four-year full-time degree can be studied across different modes of attendance. The Highlands and Islands setting gives the programme a distinctive character: the region is one of exceptional cultural and historical richness, with a living Gaelic tradition, significant archaeological and historical sites, and a complex story of land, population, and identity that raises profound questions about how heritage is defined and who controls it. You will engage with these questions in a context where they have immediate local relevance, as well as studying broader theoretical and historical frameworks.

You will develop skills in historical research, cultural analysis, the interpretation of material culture and landscape, and the critical evaluation of how heritage is constructed and contested. These capabilities are directly relevant to careers in the heritage sector and also transferable to a wide range of other professional contexts.

Graduates go on to work in museums, heritage organisations, archives, community history projects, tourism, cultural policy, education, and research. Many pursue postgraduate study in heritage management, history, museum studies, or cultural studies.
