Criminology with Law

Criminology with law is a degree that brings together the scientific study of crime and the legal frameworks through which society responds to it. Criminology asks why crime occurs, who is affected by it, and what the social conditions are that produce different patterns of offending and victimisation. Law provides the rules, institutions, and procedures through which societies define criminal behaviour, process offenders, and seek to deliver justice.

You will examine the relationship between crime, the law, and criminal justice, developing both a critical theoretical understanding of criminological debates and a practical knowledge of how legal processes operate in criminal contexts. You will study criminological theory, criminal law, victimology, policing and prosecution, and the governance of punishment and rehabilitation, developing the analytical and critical skills to engage with complex questions of justice and social policy.

Graduates are well prepared for careers in the criminal justice system, including probation, youth justice, court administration, the police service, and policy roles. The law component broadens pathways to legal practice for those who wish to pursue further professional training, including the routes towards qualification as a solicitor or barrister. Research, policy analysis, social work, and the voluntary sector are also common career destinations.
