Criminology with Law

Criminology and law are disciplines with natural and productive overlaps. Criminology uses the tools of sociology, psychology, and political analysis to understand why crime occurs, how it is defined, and how society responds to it. Law provides the formal framework within which crime is codified, prosecuted, and punished.

Studying them together gives you a richer understanding of both: you can examine how legal rules are shaped by social forces, and how the gaps between the law on paper and its lived reality reveal deeper inequalities and tensions in how justice is administered.

At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme explores both disciplines with seriousness and depth. You will engage with criminological theory, drawing on classical and contemporary accounts of deviance, policing, and punishment, while also developing a firm grounding in the structure of English law, including criminal law, the law of evidence, and the workings of the courts. You will examine questions about sentencing policy, the treatment of offenders and victims, and the role of institutions such as the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, and the prison system in producing outcomes that may not match the ideals of justice the law sets out.

The typical entry tariff of 120 points makes the programme accessible to students with a range of academic backgrounds.

The combination of criminology and law opens doors to a wide range of careers. Many graduates go on to work in the criminal justice system itself, in roles such as probation officer, police officer, legal adviser, and court administrator. Others pursue work in research, policy development, the voluntary sector, or advocacy organisations concerned with prison reform, victims' rights, or human rights more broadly.

Some graduates go on to qualify as solicitors or barristers by completing further professional training, while others pursue postgraduate study in criminology, law, social work, or public policy to deepen their expertise and open more senior roles.
