Criminology

Criminology at Winchester approaches the study of crime not simply as an inventory of offending types and criminal justice responses but as a critical engagement with the wider social, legal, and ideological forces that shape how crime is defined, experienced, and responded to. Understanding crime means examining the power relations that determine which acts are criminalised and which are not, the social conditions that generate offending, and the gaps between what criminal justice systems promise and what they deliver. This approach develops graduates who can think rigorously and independently about some of the most contested questions in public life.

At Winchester this three-year full-time programme goes beyond the textbook to explore real cases, real issues, and real solutions. You will challenge your assumptions about the causes of crime, confront its consequences for individuals and communities, and investigate how justice can be made fairer, smarter, and more effective. The curriculum engages with both theoretical frameworks and empirical research, developing your ability to draw on evidence while maintaining the critical perspective that good criminological thinking requires.

You will develop skills in research methods, both quantitative and qualitative, in critical analysis, in written argument, and in the kind of reflective, evidence-based thinking that criminal justice and related professions increasingly demand of graduates.

Graduates move into careers in probation, youth justice, social work, policing, policy, the voluntary and charity sector, advocacy, journalism, and research. Many continue to postgraduate study in criminology, social work, law, or public policy, often as a route into specialist professional practice or research.
