Criminology

Keele has a particular distinction in criminology: it was among the first universities to teach the subject as an undergraduate discipline in the UK, and its programme has been research-led from the start, combining theoretical understanding of crime with the practical application of that knowledge in real-world settings. Criminology is the scientific and social study of crime, deviance, and the responses of the criminal justice system, asking fundamental questions about why activities come to be defined as criminal, what causes offending, how victims experience harm, and whether punishment and rehabilitation actually work.

At Keele this three-year full-time programme benefits from institutional links to criminal justice agencies, including connections with police, probation services, and prisons, that allow you to explore real-world scenarios and develop professional networks alongside your academic study. You will study criminological theory, the sociological and psychological dimensions of crime and deviance, the operation of criminal justice systems, victimology, policing, and the policy context that shapes how crime is responded to.
