Criminology and Sociology

Criminology and Sociology together offer one of the most socially engaged perspectives available at degree level, examining how crime is defined and measured, who is most likely to commit it or be affected by it, and how society's institutions respond. Criminology asks why crime happens and how criminal justice systems work, while Sociology provides the broader analytical framework for understanding inequality, power, identity, and social change. The entry tariff of 72 UCAS points reflects the programme's commitment to widening participation and supporting students who have the potential to succeed. Once in the main degree, you will examine how crime is defined and by whom, the causes and consequences of criminal behaviour, the workings of courts, prisons, and police services, and the social structures that shape patterns of offending and victimisation.

A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement are all available, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience and international perspectives before you graduate. The programme runs full time.

Careers for criminology and sociology graduates span the criminal justice system, the third sector, social work, policy, research, education, and media. Many graduates work in probation, youth justice, victim support, community safety, and related roles in local government. Others move into academic research or postgraduate study in criminology, social policy, or sociology.
