Criminology and Sociology

Criminology and sociology is a combination that develops a comprehensive understanding of criminological and sociological perspectives on the causes and consequences of crime, the criminal justice system, and the broader societal structures in which both are embedded. Criminology asks why crime happens, who commits it, who is victimised, and how the institutions of policing, prosecution, courts, and prisons respond. Sociology provides the theoretical and empirical framework for understanding how those institutions, along with the wider structures of class, race, gender, and power, shape the experiences of individuals and communities.

At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for those who would benefit from additional academic preparation, alongside a sandwich year and work placement that give you direct professional experience in criminal justice, social research, or related settings before graduation. You will develop skills in criminological theory, sociological analysis, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and the application of these frameworks to real-world questions about crime, justice, inequality, and social change. You will graduate with a broad foundation for careers in criminal justice, social justice, and related sectors. Careers include the probation service, social work, community justice, victim support, youth offending services, research and policy analysis, the civil service, journalism, teaching, and the many roles in the voluntary and public sectors that engage with questions of crime, inequality, and social welfare. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in criminology, sociology, social work, or criminal justice policy.
