Criminal justice is the study of the institutions, processes, and social dynamics that define how societies respond to crime. It encompasses policing, prosecution, courts, sentencing, prisons, and probation, as well as the broader questions of why societies criminalise certain behaviours, how they balance punishment and rehabilitation, and what justice means for those who are harmed by crime and for those who are caught up in the system. The policing specialism adds a particular focus on the role, methods, ethics, and challenges of police work in contemporary society.

This four-year, full-time programme at the University of the West of Scotland leads to a Bachelor of Arts with Honours and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to engage with criminal justice and policing in a different national context. You will study the theory and evidence surrounding crime, the structure and operation of the criminal justice system, the sociology and psychology of offending, victim experiences, and the specific dimensions of policing as a professional practice. The year abroad provides comparative perspective that enriches your understanding of how different societies approach the challenges of crime and justice.

Graduates of criminal justice programmes move into roles in the police service, the Scottish Prison Service, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, the probation service equivalent, victim support organisations, community safety, social work, and the voluntary sector. The policing strand in particular provides academic preparation for those seeking to enter the police or to develop their careers within it, including the kind of evidence-based thinking about policing that professional development programmes value. Further postgraduate study in criminology, criminal justice, or social work is a natural extension for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue academic careers.
