About this course

Crime scene science applies the methods of natural and forensic science to the investigation of crime. It sits at the boundary between the laboratory and the courtroom, asking how physical evidence, biological material, trace substances, and other remnants at a crime scene can be collected, analysed, and interpreted to support criminal justice processes. The discipline requires both scientific rigour and an understanding of the legal and procedural frameworks within which forensic evidence must be gathered and presented.

At Teesside University, this three-year full-time programme gives you a grounding in the scientific principles and practical methods that underpin crime scene investigation. You will develop knowledge of human anatomy and physiology as they relate to forensic contexts, including the study of biological profiles for human identification: sex determination, estimation of age at death, stature assessment, and biological affinity. This knowledge is applied to the recovery and identification of human remains, covering both the regulatory requirements around handling such material and the ethical responsibilities that come with this work.

Crime scene examination, the analysis of physical and trace evidence, and the chain of custody and documentation processes that ensure evidence remains admissible are all central to the programme. The sandwich placement year gives you the opportunity to gain structured professional experience before you complete your degree, and work placement experience is integrated into the programme.

You will develop strong practical skills alongside analytical and report-writing abilities, learning to communicate your scientific findings clearly within the legal context in which they will be used.

Graduates go on to careers in crime scene examination, forensic laboratory work, law enforcement support, and related roles in the criminal justice system. Many also pursue postgraduate study in forensic science, forensic anthropology, or related specialisms. The combination of scientific training and practical placement experience prepares you for a demanding but rewarding field.
