About this course

Creative writing is the practice of crafting original literary work in any of its forms, from fiction and poetry to creative non-fiction, scriptwriting, and hybrid and experimental forms. A degree in creative writing develops your voice, your technical skill across different genres and modes, and your understanding of the literary traditions and contemporary contexts within which writing is made and received. It also develops your ability to read carefully, to give and receive constructive criticism, and to think seriously about language, form, and the relationship between writer and reader.

At Edge Hill University, this three-year full-time programme is designed for students with a passion for reading and writing who want to explore their creative ideas across a range of forms. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement opportunities are available, giving you the chance to develop professional experience in writing, publishing, or related industries and to broaden your perspective by engaging with literary culture in a different context. You will write across forms and genres, receiving guidance and feedback from tutors who are themselves active writers, and you will study the craft principles, literary history, and contemporary debates that inform your development as a practitioner.

Edge Hill has a strong reputation in creative writing education and is closely connected to the literary community in the North West of England.

Graduates from creative writing programmes go on to careers in publishing, journalism, education, scriptwriting, the charity sector, arts administration, and communications, as well as building careers as novelists, poets, screenwriters, or essayists. The ability to write with clarity, originality, and purpose is valued across virtually every field, and the editorial, critical, and collaborative skills the degree develops are relevant far beyond explicitly literary careers. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in creative writing or related fields, and some go on to publish significant bodies of work across different genres and formats.
