About this course

Creative writing and media is a joint degree that develops two interlocking capabilities: the craft of making original written work and the critical understanding of the wider media landscape in which writing operates and is consumed. Creative writing takes your development as a practitioner seriously, working across fiction, poetry, scripts, and other forms with disciplined attention to technique, revision, and voice. Media studies examines how content is produced, distributed, and received, engaging with journalism, broadcasting, digital platforms, advertising, and the broader cultural and political economy of modern communications.

At York St John University this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for those who benefit from additional preparation before entering the main degree, as well as a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement component, giving you substantial structured opportunities to develop professionally and internationally before graduation. You will grow as a writer through creative practice and workshop-based study while also building the analytical skills to understand the contexts in which your writing will eventually appear. The typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects the accessible nature of the programme and the range of creative and academic backgrounds it welcomes.

You will develop writing craft, critical thinking, research ability, and the professional skills needed to engage with real media and creative environments. The combination is designed to produce graduates who are both creatively skilled and commercially aware.

Graduates pursue careers in writing, journalism, digital content, broadcasting, public relations, marketing, script development, and arts administration. Many work across several of these fields simultaneously. Postgraduate study in creative writing, media, or journalism is a natural continuation.

Highly recommend
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the final show is a proper platform β€” industry people come to see it. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student…

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: critique sessions are tough but push your work to the next level. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good transport links…
