About this course

Counselling, psychology, and education together address how people develop, learn, and change across the lifespan, and how professionals can support those processes in ways that are evidence-based, ethical, and compassionate. Psychology provides the scientific understanding of mind and behaviour, while counselling develops the practical and relational skills needed to support individuals through difficulty and promote wellbeing. Education brings knowledge of how learning occurs and how educational settings can be made more responsive to the diverse needs of those within them.

At the University of Aberdeen, this five-year full-time integrated master's degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society and designed to prepare practitioners for professional counselling roles across a range of settings, including healthcare, education, and community contexts. The programme takes you through both undergraduate and postgraduate stages within a single integrated structure, developing your theoretical knowledge of psychology and counselling practice alongside the cross-disciplinary competencies needed to adapt and excel in evolving professional landscapes. A year abroad is integrated into the programme, giving you the opportunity to encounter different professional and cultural contexts.

On completion of the fifth year, you exit with a validated qualification as a professional counsellor.

Graduates are qualified to practise as counsellors and to pursue registration with relevant professional bodies. Careers in healthcare counselling, school and university counselling, therapeutic services, community mental health, and educational psychology support are all natural destinations. The BPS accreditation also supports further training in clinical or counselling psychology.

Many graduates pursue postgraduate research or specialist training in areas such as bereavement counselling, trauma therapy, or educational psychology.

Genuinely worthwhile
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the …

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant studen…
