Construction Project Management

Construction project management is the discipline that coordinates and controls the complex processes involved in delivering built environment projects, from small commercial developments to major infrastructure schemes. It brings together knowledge of construction technology, engineering, contract law, procurement, planning, risk management, sustainability and the leadership skills required to guide multidisciplinary teams through projects that often span years, involve many stakeholders and are subject to changing conditions. Good project management is what separates a building that is delivered on time, on budget and to specification from one that is not.

At Coventry University this three-year, full-time programme develops your skills across the full range of project management competencies, with a particular emphasis on sustainability, technology and leadership that reflects the directions in which the construction sector is moving. You will study construction technology and materials, project planning and scheduling, cost management, contract administration, building information modelling, risk assessment and the legal and regulatory frameworks governing construction. The programme prepares you for project management roles across building, civil engineering and the utilities sectors.

It includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, all of which give you direct professional experience in construction environments before graduation, building the practical knowledge and industry networks that are essential for a career in this field.

Graduates move into careers as project managers, site managers, quantity surveyors, construction managers, contracts managers and client-side project coordinators across residential, commercial, civil engineering and infrastructure sectors. Professional development typically involves working toward chartered status with bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Building or the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in construction management, project management or related fields, developing specialist expertise in areas such as sustainable construction, infrastructure delivery or digital construction methods.
