Construction Management
Construction management is the discipline that keeps major building projects on track, coordinating the people, processes, materials and technologies that turn architectural drawings into finished buildings, infrastructure and environments. A construction manager must understand both the technical realities of how structures are built and the commercial, contractual and organisational challenges of managing large, complex projects involving multiple contractors, consultants and clients. The built environment sector is one of the largest employers in the UK, and skilled construction managers are consistently in demand as towns, cities and infrastructure continue to develop.
Nottingham Trent University's programme includes a foundation year built into its four-year full-time structure, providing an accessible entry point for students who have the aptitude and motivation for the subject but who benefit from an additional year of foundational study before entering the degree proper. You will study the technical dimensions of construction, including building technology, materials, structures and services, alongside project management, contract law, health and safety, sustainability and the economics of construction. Graduates of construction management programmes typically move into site management, project management and quantity surveying roles across housebuilding, commercial construction, infrastructure and fit-out sectors. Many go on to work for major contractors, developers, housing associations and public sector clients, or within specialist consultancies. The qualification provides a foundation for professional membership of the Chartered Institute of Building and other construction industry bodies.
Some graduates move into facilities management, development management or property consultancy. Postgraduate study in construction project management, quantity surveying or facilities management is a well-established route for further development.
