Computing for Business and Management

Computing for business and management is a discipline that sits at the intersection of technology and commercial practice, developing the technical knowledge to work with computing systems alongside the business understanding to apply them effectively in organisational contexts. In an era when technology is central to virtually every business function, the ability to understand both the technical and the commercial dimensions of information systems, digital transformation and data-driven decision-making is increasingly valuable across a wide range of roles.

At the University of Sussex, this three-year full-time programme, which is available with a foundation year, gives you a grounding in computing principles, programming, systems analysis, data management and digital technologies alongside the core disciplines of business management, strategy, marketing and organisational behaviour. You will study in the Future Technologies Labs, which include student-focused working spaces, high-specification computing suites and project workspaces that provide a professional environment for practical learning. A sandwich year placement, a year abroad, and a work placement are all available, giving you substantial professional and international experience that bridges academic study and the digital economy.

The foundation year option provides a structured introduction to the mathematical, computational and academic skills that the degree requires, and is well suited to students who are motivated by the subject but need additional preparation before engaging with degree-level material. Once in the main programme, you will develop the technical problem-solving skills of a computing graduate alongside the commercial and strategic thinking of a business student.

Graduates move into technology management, systems analysis and design, IT consultancy, digital project management, business analysis, data management, enterprise systems roles, and a wide range of positions in organisations where computing knowledge and business acumen are both required. Postgraduate study in computing, business information systems or management is a natural next step.
