About this course

Computer science and artificial intelligence together span the core technical discipline of computing and its most transformative contemporary application. Computer science gives you the foundational knowledge of how computers work, how software is designed and built, and how computational systems can be analysed and made more efficient. Artificial intelligence extends this into the design of systems that can learn from data, reason under uncertainty, perceive the world and take actions, covering areas from machine learning and neural networks to natural language processing and robotics.

At Aberystwyth University you will be immersed in the fundamentals of computer science, covering operating systems, telecommunications, database management, human-computer interaction, agile methodologies and object-oriented programming, alongside in-depth study of a wide range of AI and machine learning techniques. The programme runs over three years full time and builds progressively from foundational principles to advanced work in both fields, developing the problem-solving skills and technical depth that complex computational challenges demand.

Graduates of computer science and AI programmes are among the most sought-after in the graduate market, with every sector now requiring people who can build intelligent systems and work with data at scale. Software engineering, machine learning, data science, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, fintech and academic research are among the many career paths available. The combination of core computer science discipline with AI specialism positions graduates particularly well for roles at the frontier of what computing can do.

Postgraduate study in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science or software engineering is a natural further route.
