About this course

Computer science is the discipline that underpins the digital technologies transforming every aspect of modern life. It encompasses the theoretical foundations of computation and the practical skills of software development, asking how programs are designed and built, how computers process information, and how systems can be made to work reliably, efficiently, and securely at scale. The discipline spans areas as varied as algorithms and data structures, software engineering, artificial intelligence, computer networks, databases, human-computer interaction, and systems programming.

At the University of Gloucestershire this four-year programme includes a year in industry between the second and third years of study, giving you the opportunity to gain work experience and develop industry contacts while applying the skills you have built in an academic setting. You will study the core foundations of computing alongside more applied and specialist content, developing both the theoretical understanding and the practical programming ability that employers look for in computer science graduates. The placement year is a significant differentiator in a competitive graduate job market, and many students use it to confirm career direction and build the professional relationships that support their transition into employment.

Computer science graduates work across every sector of the economy, in roles including software engineer, developer, systems analyst, database administrator, cybersecurity specialist, data scientist, and technical product manager. The technology industry is the largest employer, but computing skills are in demand in finance, healthcare, logistics, government, media, and beyond. The placement year strengthens both technical skills and professional confidence, and many graduates secure employment with placement organisations.

Some go on to postgraduate study in computer science, artificial intelligence, or data science to develop specialist expertise.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a bril…

I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: you finish with a portfolio that recruiters take seriously. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local c…
