About this course

Computer science provides the theoretical and practical foundations for understanding how computing systems are designed, how programmes are constructed, and how computation can be harnessed to address problems across every domain of human activity. From algorithms and data structures through to machine learning, cybersecurity, and software engineering, the discipline develops a set of skills that are in consistent and growing demand. At degree level, computer science equips you not just with current technical knowledge but with the fundamental understanding needed to adapt as the field evolves rapidly.

At Plymouth this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year that provides a supported entry route for students who benefit from additional preparation in mathematics and computing before progressing to the main degree. The foundation year develops programming skills in Python and applies them to real-world settings through workshops involving guest academics and industry figures, building both technical confidence and an awareness of how computing is used in practice. Across the programme you will develop expertise in how programmes are designed and written, how high-performance computing and artificial intelligence can address complex problems, and how software systems are built and maintained.
