About this course

Computer science is the discipline that studies computation, algorithms, software systems, and the principles that make reliable, efficient, and secure computing possible. It combines theoretical rigour with practical problem-solving, developing your ability to think algorithmically, to design and build software, and to engage with the mathematical foundations that underpin the field. As computing becomes ever more central to every sector of modern life, the demand for people who can think and build in this way continues to grow.

At Gloucestershire this programme begins with a foundation year, giving you the academic and technical preparation needed before the main computer science degree begins and making the programme accessible to students who may not have studied computing or mathematics at advanced level. Across the full four years you will cover the core areas of computer science, including algorithms and data structures, programming, software engineering, databases, networks, artificial intelligence, and computer systems, developing both your technical capability and your ability to apply it to real problems. The programme includes a sandwich year with a placement, allowing you to spend time in industry between your second and third years, gaining practical experience and building professional contacts.

That placement year is a significant asset at graduation, both in terms of employment prospects and in the depth of understanding it brings.

Computer science graduates are consistently among the most sought-after in the graduate labour market.
