About this course

Computer science with cyber security is a programme designed for a moment when the security of digital systems has become one of the most important challenges in technology and society. Every organisation that relies on digital infrastructure, which is to say almost every organisation of any significance, faces the threat of cyber attack, and the shortage of skilled practitioners who can protect systems, investigate breaches, and build security into software from the ground up is acute and growing.

At the University of York, this three-year full-time programme develops you as a skilled practitioner in the principles and practice of cyber security, equipping you with the in-demand skills to help protect organisations from the threat of cyber crime. You will study the core foundations of computer science alongside specialist content in cryptography, network security, secure software engineering, penetration testing, digital forensics, and the human and organisational dimensions of cyber security. York has an outstanding reputation in computer science, and the curriculum is informed by research at the forefront of the field.

The course includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement, giving you professional and international experience in security-focused computing environments before you graduate.

Graduates from computer science with cyber security programmes are in genuinely high demand, with careers in penetration testing, security operations, secure software development, digital forensics, security consultancy, and technical architecture across financial services, defence, technology, and public sector organisations. Further study at postgraduate level in cyber security, computer science, or information assurance is available for those who wish to pursue specialist or research careers.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the lecturers include people actively shipping research to industry. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transport links make it ea…

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” the city is a brilli…
