About this course

Computer science with artificial intelligence brings together the foundational principles of computing with one of the most transformative and rapidly advancing fields in technology. Computer science provides the theoretical and practical tools: algorithms, data structures, software engineering, networks and systems. Artificial intelligence builds on these to develop systems that can learn from data, recognise patterns, reason under uncertainty and carry out tasks that previously required human judgement.

The applications span healthcare, finance, transport, natural language processing, robotics and virtually every other domain of modern life.

At the University of Leicester, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a work placement and a year abroad. The sandwich and placement elements give you direct professional experience in computing or AI-related roles, developing real-world skills and commercial awareness alongside your academic training. The year abroad provides exposure to AI research and development in a different institutional and national context, which is valuable in a field that is genuinely global in its development and application.

You will study programming, algorithms, computer systems, software engineering and mathematical foundations alongside machine learning, neural networks, natural language processing, computer vision, data science and the ethical dimensions of AI systems. Hands-on project work develops your ability to design, build and evaluate AI-enabled applications in realistic settings.

Graduates go into careers in software engineering, machine learning, data science, AI research, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, technology consulting, fintech and a wide range of industries where AI capability is increasingly required. The field continues to expand rapidly and skilled graduates are in demand. Postgraduate study in AI, machine learning, data science or computer science is an option for those who want to develop deeper expertise or pursue research.
