About this course

Computer science with artificial intelligence is a degree that addresses two of the most consequential fields in technology today. Computer science provides the foundational knowledge that underpins all software development: algorithms, data structures, programming languages, computer architecture, databases and software engineering. Artificial intelligence extends that foundation into systems that can learn from data, recognise patterns, process natural language and make decisions, and it is increasingly central to how organisations across every sector operate and compete.

At Birmingham City University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement and a work placement, giving you direct industry experience in a computing or AI-related role. You will develop skills in programming and software development alongside more specialist knowledge in areas including machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, cyber security and cloud computing. The programme is designed to produce computer scientists who can build high-value software solutions for the modern economy, across a range of roles from software developer and AI engineer to web developer and security analyst.

Artificial intelligence and computer science graduates are in extremely high demand across technology, finance, healthcare, retail, logistics, defence and the public sector. Roles include machine learning engineer, AI research scientist, software developer, data scientist, cloud architect, cybersecurity analyst and product manager. The technical skills developed through the degree are valuable across virtually every industry that uses software, which is now almost all of them.
