Here's the honest picture on this course - what you'd study, whether you'd likely get in, what it pays, and where it leads. Everything's real data.
About this course

Computer science is the systematic study of computation: the theory of what problems can be solved algorithmically, the design of data structures and algorithms to solve them efficiently, and the engineering of software systems that work reliably in the real world. It encompasses artificial intelligence, networking, databases, human-computer interaction, operating systems and the mathematical foundations that underpin all of these areas. In an economy where digital technology is reshaping every sector, the demand for computer scientists who can think rigorously about both theory and practice is sustained and growing.

At the University of Suffolk, this three-year full-time degree offers a flexible curriculum with diverse learning pathways, allowing you to build a broad foundation in the core of computer science while selecting specialist modules that reflect your particular interests, whether in machine learning, cybersecurity, software development, data science or web technologies. You will develop both theoretical understanding and practical programming and systems skills, working with contemporary languages, tools and development environments throughout the programme. A sandwich year with work placement opportunities is built into the degree, giving you extended professional experience in an industry setting before you complete your studies.

This direct exposure to working software environments develops your professional readiness and your understanding of how computer science is practised outside the university. Typical entry is around 120 UCAS tariff points.

Computer science graduates are employed across virtually every industry, in roles spanning software development, data engineering, cloud computing, cybersecurity, machine learning, UX research and technical project management. The combination of rigorous analytical training and practical skills means graduates are well prepared for both junior technical roles and more strategic positions as they gain experience. Further study includes conversion masters for those who wish to specialise, research degrees in computer science, and postgraduate programmes in areas such as artificial intelligence, data science and cybersecurity.
