About this course

Computer Science is the discipline that underpins the digital world, concerned with how information is represented, processed, stored, and communicated, and with the design of the software and hardware systems that perform these operations. It combines rigorous mathematical reasoning with creative problem-solving, and its graduates work at the foundation of almost every major technological development of the past several decades, from the internet and mobile computing to artificial intelligence and data-driven science.

At the University of Liverpool, this four-year programme follows a route that includes a foundation component, providing additional support to build the mathematical and computational foundations you need before progressing into the full computer science curriculum. This makes the programme well suited to students whose prior qualifications in mathematics or computing may not fully meet the standard entry requirements but who have the aptitude and motivation to succeed at degree level. Once into the main programme, you will study core areas including algorithms and data structures, programming, computer architecture, software engineering, networks, databases, and theory of computation.

A year abroad is available within the programme, offering the opportunity to study at a partner university in a different country and to broaden your perspective on the international computing community.

You will develop strong programming skills across multiple languages and paradigms, and you will learn to design, build, and evaluate complex software systems. The ability to think algorithmically, to work through problems systematically, and to reason about the correctness and efficiency of solutions are all central to the programme.
