About this course

Computer Science is the systematic study of computation, algorithms, data and the software systems that make computing possible. It asks fundamental questions about what problems can be solved by machines, how solutions can be designed and implemented efficiently, and how software and systems can be made reliable, secure and scalable. As the digital transformation of every sector of the economy continues to accelerate, the ability to design, build and evaluate computing solutions has become one of the most valuable and versatile skills available to a graduate.

At Birmingham Newman University this three-year full-time BSc gives you a strong foundation in computing and software development. You will develop knowledge in areas such as programming, algorithms, data structures, software engineering, databases, networks and cybersecurity, building both theoretical understanding and practical ability to design and implement computing solutions. The programme is designed to prepare you for a rapidly evolving technological world, developing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed to adapt as technologies and methods continue to change.

Graduates in Computer Science are in strong and sustained demand across virtually every sector of the economy. Many go on to careers in software development, systems engineering, web development, cybersecurity, data engineering and database administration. Others find roles in IT consulting, product management, technical support, artificial intelligence development and embedded systems.

The logical reasoning and problem-solving skills the degree develops are also valued in finance, healthcare technology, gaming, defence and government digital services. For those wishing to continue their studies, the degree provides a good foundation for postgraduate work in computer science, software engineering, data science, cybersecurity or human-computer interaction.
