About this course

Computer science is the systematic study of computation, algorithms, data structures, and the software and hardware systems through which information is processed and transformed. It is both a theoretical discipline, asking fundamental questions about what can be computed, how efficiently, and with what guarantees, and a practical one, concerned with building the software systems, networks, and applications on which modern life depends. At degree level, it equips you with both the deep foundations and the current technical skills needed for a long and adaptable career in a field that continues to evolve rapidly.

At Birkbeck this programme gives you the knowledge and skills to develop a career in computing and software systems development. Birkbeck's teaching model supports evening study, making this degree accessible to students who are working or have other commitments during the day, and the location in central London places you close to one of the world's largest technology employment markets. You will study the theory and practice of software alongside a deep understanding of the fundamentals that underpin long-lasting professional capability.

This balance between current practical skills and foundational understanding means you graduate able to adapt as the field changes rather than depending solely on techniques that may become outdated.

Computer science graduates are among the most consistently employable in the UK. Software development, systems engineering, data analysis, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and technology consultancy are among the most direct career paths. The breadth of sectors that now depend on software means that computer science skills are in demand in finance, healthcare, government, entertainment, retail, and virtually every other field.

Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, or related disciplines, or move into research and development roles at the frontier of the field.

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good trans…
