About this course

Artificial intelligence is reshaping every sector of the economy and every dimension of daily life, from how medical diagnoses are made to how content is recommended, vehicles are driven, and complex decisions are supported. AI is not simply a technology but a discipline: it draws on mathematics, computer science, cognitive science, and data analysis to develop systems that can perceive, reason, learn, and act. Understanding how these systems are built, how they work, and what their limitations are is one of the most valuable and in-demand forms of technical expertise available to graduates today.

At the University of Hull, this four-year full-time programme is designed for students who need to develop their mathematical and computing foundations before embarking on the full degree, beginning with an additional year that builds the knowledge and skills required to engage with the main programme with confidence. From that starting point you will progress into the core of computer science, studying algorithms, data structures, software engineering, and programming, before moving into the specialist AI curriculum. You will explore machine learning, neural networks, natural language processing, computer vision, and the ethical and social questions that AI systems raise.

Hull's approach connects technical rigour with an awareness of the broader context in which AI is deployed, recognising that the engineers of AI systems bear real responsibilities for their effects.

You will develop strong programming skills, the ability to design and evaluate AI systems, and the mathematical foundations in probability and statistics that underpin modern machine learning.

Graduates go on to careers in software engineering, data science, AI research and development, machine learning engineering, and technology roles across finance, healthcare, manufacturing, and digital industries. Many also move into consultancy, product development, or research. Postgraduate study in artificial intelligence, data science, or computer science is a well-supported route.

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the career fair connections with top tech employers are genuinely valuable. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable…

Highly recommend
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: you finish with a portfolio that recruiters take seriously. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” the city is …
