About this course

Computer science with a specialism in artificial intelligence is a degree that addresses the theoretical foundations of intelligent computational systems alongside the practical skills of building and deploying them. AI sits at the frontier of computer science, drawing on machine learning, neural networks, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics and the mathematical underpinnings of all these methods to create systems that can learn from data, recognise patterns and make decisions without being explicitly programmed to do so. The specialism positions you within one of the most rapidly developing and consequential areas in the history of technology.

At the University of Plymouth this three-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation before the main degree, alongside a sandwich year in professional practice and a year abroad. You will develop both the core computer science skills of programming, algorithms, data structures and software engineering and the specialist AI knowledge that makes this degree distinctive. The placement year gives you direct professional experience in an AI or computing role, significantly strengthening your career prospects and helping you understand how AI is actually being deployed in real organisations.
