About this course

Artificial intelligence is one of the fastest-moving and most significant areas of computer science, encompassing machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics and the reasoning systems that underpin intelligent behaviour in machines. As AI moves from research laboratories into every sector of the economy, the demand for computer scientists with genuine expertise in AI has grown dramatically, and graduates with deep technical capability in this area are among the most sought-after in the technology labour market. At the University of Leeds this five-year industrial programme includes a substantial sandwich placement year.

You will develop the computer science foundations, including programming, algorithms, data structures, software engineering and mathematics, alongside the specialised AI content covering machine learning, neural networks, knowledge representation, optimisation and the ethical and social dimensions of AI systems. The industrial placement, which is embedded within the five-year structure, places you within a technology or AI organisation for an extended period before you complete the final year of your degree. This gives you direct experience of how AI is applied in real industrial contexts, developing the professional judgment and applied understanding that academic study alone cannot provide.

Work placements are also built into the programme.

Graduates work as machine learning engineers, AI researchers, data scientists, NLP specialists, computer vision engineers and AI product developers across technology companies, financial services, healthcare, automotive, media, defence and government. Leeds's strong industry connections, particularly in the North of England's growing technology sector, support meaningful industrial placements. Some graduates go on to doctoral research in machine learning, computer vision, NLP or AI more broadly, contributing to the academic and industrial research that is driving the field forward.

The combination of technical depth and industrial experience makes Leeds's AI graduates particularly competitive across the full range of technical and applied AI roles.

Exceeded expectations
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the career fair connections with top tech employers are genuinely valuable. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable…

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the cit…
