About this course

Computer science and mathematics is a combination that sits at the heart of the modern technological world. Mathematics provides the logical foundations, the abstraction and the rigorous reasoning that computer science depends on. Computer science takes those foundations and applies them to the design of algorithms, the architecture of systems, the engineering of software and the development of intelligent machines.

Studying both together gives you a deeper understanding of each discipline than you could achieve by studying either alone, and a versatile skill set that is among the most sought after in the graduate market.

At the University of Keele this three-year full-time programme covers a wide range of topics across both disciplines, allowing you to tailor the degree to match your interests and career goals. On the computer science side you will study programming, algorithms, data structures, software engineering, networks, databases and topics such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. On the mathematics side you will develop fluency in calculus, algebra, statistics, discrete mathematics and mathematical modelling.

You will tackle real-world challenges and develop both technical and analytical problem-solving skills through a combination of academic study and practical project work. A sandwich year gives you the opportunity for substantial professional experience before your final year, the option to study abroad adds an international dimension, and work placement opportunities connect your learning with real professional environments. Industry insights and guest lectures are built into the programme, giving you direct exposure to how these disciplines are applied in practice.

Graduates move into software development, data science, cybersecurity, mathematical modelling, financial technology, research and a wide range of technology-related roles. The dual expertise is especially valued in sectors that require both computational skills and quantitative rigour. Postgraduate study in computer science, mathematics, data science or related fields is also a natural continuation.
