About this course

Computer Science and Global Philosophies and Worldviews is an unusual and intellectually ambitious combination that places the technical discipline of computing in conversation with some of humanity's deepest traditions of philosophical thought. Computer science is concerned with the design, analysis, and implementation of computational systems, from programming and algorithms to artificial intelligence and networks. Global philosophies and worldviews takes an expansive approach to philosophy, exploring the questions of truth, value, and what it means to be human across African, Chinese, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, and secular traditions.

At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placements, making it practically and internationally grounded. The computer science strand develops your technical skills in programming, systems design, data structures, and computing theory, alongside more applied areas that reflect the current state of the field. The global philosophies strand broadens your intellectual horizons in a way that is increasingly relevant to computing: questions about AI ethics, algorithmic bias, the values embedded in technology, and the social implications of digital systems are all questions that require philosophical as well as technical thinking.
