About this course

Computer science and electronic engineering is a combination that bridges the software and hardware dimensions of the digital world. Computer science provides the theoretical and practical foundations of computing, including algorithms, data structures, programming, software engineering and artificial intelligence. Electronic engineering extends this into the physical: circuits, signals, embedded systems, microcontrollers and the hardware layer on which software ultimately runs.

Together they give you a comprehensive understanding of how modern computational and electronic systems are built and how they work.

At the University of Chester, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and a year abroad. The foundation year provides the mathematical and scientific grounding needed before you progress to degree-level work in both disciplines. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study computer science and engineering in a different academic and technological environment, broadening your perspective in a field that is genuinely global.

You will study programming and software development, computer architecture, networks, operating systems, digital electronics, signal processing, embedded systems design and microprocessor systems. Mathematics, particularly in the areas of logic, discrete mathematics and analysis, underpins much of both disciplines and is developed progressively. Practical project work, laboratory sessions and independent investigation are central to the learning experience.

Graduates go on to careers in software engineering, embedded systems development, electronics design, telecommunications, systems integration, hardware design, defence, aerospace, healthcare technology and computing research. The combination of software and hardware expertise is particularly valued in industries where the two domains converge, including the Internet of Things, autonomous systems and consumer electronics. Postgraduate study and professional development through engineering institutions are common routes for those who want to specialise further.
