About this course

Computer science and economics is an unusually powerful combination for the modern world. Computer science provides the theoretical understanding of computation and the practical skills of programming and software engineering, while economics brings the frameworks of rational decision-making, market analysis, and the study of how incentives and information shape behaviour. Together they give you the tools to analyse complex systems, whether you are thinking about algorithms, market mechanisms, data, or the design of digital platforms and services.

This four-year, full-time programme at the University of St Andrews leads to a Bachelor of Science with Honours and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a university in another country and to encounter both disciplines from a different academic perspective. You will cover the theoretical foundations of computer science, programming and software engineering, algorithms and data structures, alongside the core topics of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and quantitative methods. The combination is particularly well suited to questions about algorithmic markets, digital platform economics, financial technology, and the design of systems where computational and economic thinking must work together.
