About this course

Computer science and artificial intelligence together address two of the most consequential questions of our era: how do we build systems that process information reliably at scale, and how do we create machines that can learn, reason, and act in ways that seem intelligent? The disciplines are deeply intertwined. Artificial intelligence depends on the algorithmic, mathematical, and systems foundations that computer science provides, while the development of AI is increasingly shaping what computer science research looks like and what computer scientists need to know.

At the University of Sussex you will study the full range of computer science fundamentals, including programming, data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and software engineering, while developing specialist knowledge in machine learning, neural networks, computer vision, natural language processing, and the ethical dimensions of automated systems. You will learn to think clearly about what algorithms can and cannot do, and to build software that is both technically sound and socially considered. The three-year programme comes with a foundation year for those who need to build their mathematical and programming foundations before the main degree.

It also includes a sandwich placement year, giving you the opportunity to work in industry, as well as the option of a year abroad. Work placement opportunities are built into the degree, connecting your studies to real technical environments.

Graduates from computer science and AI degrees are among the most sought-after in the job market. Roles in software engineering, machine learning engineering, data science, research science, and product development are the most direct paths, spanning technology companies, financial services, healthcare, media, and the public sector. The field is also rapidly generating new roles in AI ethics, policy, and governance.

Postgraduate study in computer science, AI research, or related disciplines is a natural step for those drawn to academic or deep technical careers.
